THR - hip and cup problem - urgent!!!

Dear Dr. Lee,
My golden retriever - SkY - 2.5 year old.

Hd THR on right rear leg at around 8 months old. surgery and recovery were successfully.

Hd THR on left rear leg at 5/29/06. 1st x-ray at Aug. found black shadow along the cup/hip connecting area but not very obviously. Dr waited for another 1.5 mths observation and minimize activie to leash walk only. 2nd x-ray at 9/17. found obvious black shadow along the cup/hip bone which Dr believed that is apprrox a 2mm gap. Dr. recommanded for another surgery to replace with a bigger cup to fill up the gap asap to minize the risk of the gap further develop to larger sz coz of leg activity. Now the cap is not fall off is because Dr fix the Cup with screw at last surgery. Sky is not really using the left rear leg. It can tell by his walking posture.

The Dr I am consulting and hving surgery is the famour one for THR - Dr. Mak Chi Kin fm PAVC HK. I write here is that I wd like to consult a 2nd opinion for another any alternative besides fm surgery as it is a big hurt to my dog. My dog hd 3 operation on Right rear Leg and 2 operation on Left rear leg before his 2.5 year old. All related to THR and going to hv one more.

Anxiously awaiting yr professional option on the case.

I did see some radiolucent lesion around the cup having a screw. This can be due to looseness of the cup or signs of infection(?). I didn't use this system so I don't know how long the bone will grow into the implanted cup to stablalize the cup. Did your doctor try to do a bacterial culture to rule out the possibility of infection when he went in to change the cup? I also need to know the medical treatment information in the process of the last few months.

Dear Dr.,
i believe Dr Mak did take care about bacterial culture which you mentioned here coz he said that another critical failure is the surgery parts before infected. I wl talk to him again tmr about this.

There is no special medicine after surgery. Dr Mak gave Sky anti-biotics for the 1st 3 wks after surgery. that's it. daily short time leash walk is needed 3 wks after the surgery and suppose doggie can resume to normal activity ability by 2 - 3 months time after surgery when bones/muscles are built.
